Authorities in the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu has asked local agencies to strictly punish the abbot a pagoda for abusing a seven-year-old orphan, VnExpress reported Friday.

Duong Quoc Hiep, deputy chief of Dong Hai District's Department of Labors, War Invalids and Social Affairs, said in the newswire that Trinh Quoc Dam's maltreatment toward Tran Van Khoe was discovered by Khoe's teacher on Thursday.

Nguyen Ngoc Anh, the teacher, noticed bruises on Khoe's face, and she later found many slashes on his back and legs, VnExpress reported.

Khoe, who was living at Phuoc Dien Pagoda, told Anh that Dam had hit him.

The newswire quoted Anh as saying that this was the fourth time she found him beaten, but previous times it wasn't that critical.

Later during police interrogation, Dam admitted to hitting Khoe, because he said the boy was too stubborn to listen to his words. He said on Wednesday he hit Khoe after discovering that the boy had stolen someone's old mobile phone, according to VnExpress.

The department has contacted Bac Lieu Center for Social Welfares, asking them to adopt Khoe. The boy's mother is dead, and his father abandoned him and remarried.
