An abusive mother and her boyfriend got jail terms on Friday for battering her toddler in a headline-grabbing case in Vietnam three months ago.
The People’s Court of Di An Town, Binh Duong Province sentenced Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang, 26, to three years' imprisonment for “deliberately injuring others.”
Trang’s boyfriend, Do Trong Minh, 27, received three years and six months for the same charge.
Trang and Minh were found guilty of torturing Trang's 3-year-old daughter Tran Thi Kim Ngan, causing her to suffer a brain injury.
According to the indictment, in early May this year, Trang, a garment worker, and Minh, a security guard, rent a room in Di An Town’s Binh An Ward where they lived together as common-law husband and wife and raised Ngan, who will turn 4 in February.
At around 8 pm on September 10, Trang whipped Ngan’s buttock and hands with the bamboo stick for playing with a gas stove, according to the indictment.
Minh later joined the beating, punching and hitting Ngan’s head and face.
The couple then ordered the girl to kneel on the floor for roughly four hours before letting her go to bed at midnight.
Neighbors took her to Binh Duong General Hospital after spotting the girl lying on the floor with a swollen face and bruised eyes in the afternoon of September 12.

Medical tests showed that Ngan suffered a brain bleeding and a hematoma in her face.
Ngan was discharged on September 30, and now lives with her biological father, Tran Van To, 31, in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang.
To was also entrusted to manage the more than VND200 million (US$9,370) donated to Ngan after photos of her swollen black and blue face were published in in national newspapers and news websites.
Apart from the jail terms, Trang and Minh were ordered to pay VND3.5 million ($164) to To for Ngan’s medical costs.
