A grenade exploded at a military base in southern Vietnam on Saturday, killing a soldier and injuring 10 others, a local official told Thanh Nien.
Vo Thanh Tung, mayor of Sa Dec Town in Dong Thap Province, said the blast happened at around 8 a.m. at a base camp of the 25 Engineer Brigade.
Nguyen Ton Hoang, deputy head of Dong Thap's Party committee, said the soldiers had apparently found a Vietnam War-era grenade used for the M79 grenade launcher.
They were new conscripts who ignorantly played with the grenade, which suddenly exploded, Hoang said.
Vo Thanh Luan, 19, died and 10 other men, between 19 and 22 years of age, were rushed to hospital with injuries.
Commanding officers are investigating the incident.
A phosphorous bomb exploded at the same brigade on Nov. 10 as the soldiers were about the defuse it. No casualties were reported.
