A mentally ill man who escaped from a psychiatric hospital in the southern Vietnamese province of Dong Nai and stole a taxi Thursday was apprehended soon afterwards.

According to eyewitnesses, at around 4 a.m. Thursday Dong Xuan Tai of Saigon Taxi was filling gasoline at a gas station on Nguyen Ai Quoc Street in Bien Hoa when a man suddenly clambered into the taxi and drove away.

Two other taxis parked nearby gave chase.

After driving for around a kilometer, the man drove straight into an electric pole, damaging the taxi's front portion.

The man was caught by the two pursuing drivers and handed over to the police for questioning.

They found out that he was Le Ngoc Tai, 21, an escaped patient from the National Mental Hospital 2 in Bien Hoa.

According to the hospital, he had been admitted on October 30 and diagnosed with mental disorder.

He was being treated at the hospital when early Thursday morning his family unchained him so that he could go to the toilet. But Tai took the opportunity to escape.

He is back at the hospital and under close watch.
