Police in Vietnam's Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang have fined a homeless drug addict US$174 for going on a naked, ax-weilding drug bender that ended with him hanging from an electrical wire.
Police announced Wednesday that they have fined Hoang Van Thao, 33, VND3.7 million for disrupting public order and vandalism, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.
Thao reportedly cursed and screamed as he hacked away at the walls and windows of several houses in My Tho on the morning of October 23.
Thao allegedly struck himself in the head several times with his ax before police arrived at the scene and persuaded him to climb down from electrical wire.
He was immediately sent to a nearby hospital to be treated for his injuries.
The police said drug-induced hallucinations had inspired his wild spree. They have remanded him to the compulsory drug rehabilitation camp that he escaped from in Tien Giang Province on January 3.
Thao once owned a house in My Tho, but sold it to finance his drug habit.
Police say he served a term at a compulsory rehabilitation center in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong in 2004 and was arrested in 2007 for robbery and sentenced to four years in jail.
He was caught using drugs again in 2011 and sent to the Tien Giang rehabilitation center.
So far, there has been no word on whether or not he'll be able to pay his fine.
