Ho Chi Minh City mayor Le Hoang Quan denied rumors that the Saigon Zoo will be relocated from the city downtown to the suburban district of Cu Chi during a visit to the zoo on Wednesday.
Quan told the press that rumors had spread on social media with some people calling on netizens to sign a petition to protest the relocation plan.
He denied that, saying the city government is in fact working on a plan to build the Saigon Safari Park covering an area of 500 hectares in Cu Chi.
The Saigon Zoo in District 1 will stay, he said.
The city government has assigned relevant departments and agencies to work with the zoo’s management board to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the zoo in December.
During his visit, Quan praised the zoo for taking good care of a pair of extremely rare white Bengal tigers which gave birth to three white cubs last month.
