An elevator used to transport building materials fell from a height of three meters while carrying six people in a Ho Chi Minh City church on Friday night.
The victims included five elderly between 65 and 83 and a 38-year old man.
The injured were rushed to a local hospital in District 2 at around 6:20 pm.
The five elderly victims were transferred to the municipal hospitals of Cho Ray and Gia Dinh for further treatment, doctors said.
A member of the Parish Management Board Phung Quang Thang told Kien Thuc news that the middle-aged man, who suffers from mental illness, pushed the wrong button while the lift was moving and caused the accident.
“They had just finished attending an evening service on the third floor and used the material lift to get down to the ground,” said Thang.
“We will cover the costs and ensure the best possible treatment for the victims,” he said.
Thang added that the parish’s management board would not let anyone else travel by the lift.
