Authorities in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak Wednesday started excavating a site inside a high school believed to be a mass grave for war martyrs, Tuoi Tre reported Thursday.
Almost immediately they found remains together with items like sandals and raincoats, which have been identified as belonging to Vietnamese soldiers.
Vo Mot, chairman of the local ward, was quoted as saying that people have been talking about a mass grave inside Chu Van An High School in Buon Me Thuot Town for martyrs who died during a campaign against the US in 1968.
Provincial authorities investigated it and began the excavation, Mot said.
An unnamed official from the Buon Ma Thuot labor department said the number of soldiers and their identities were not yet known, but it was likely more remains would be found in the next few days.
