A management official at the largest market in Hung Yen Province was arrested Thursday in a police investigation into a fire that caused VND50 billion (US$2.37 million) of damage at the market las month.
Investigators alleged that Dao Ngoc Hau, 52, deputy manager of Pho Hien market, had failed to turn off the power source after the market closed on the night of March 19, when he was in charge.
Firemen said a short circuit had ignited the blaze, which burned down more than 300 booths with all the goods, including clothes, electronics and home appliances. It was considered the worst fire ever in the province.
Hau was accused of violating fire safety regulations, which is punishable by up to 12-year imprisonment according to the Penal Code.
The market of 29,000 square meters was opened last December.
