A Nghe An Province court has sentenced a woman to 20 years in jail for smuggling more than 32 kg of marijuana from Laos to Hanoi in February.
Interestingly, Phan Thi Chin, 40, who was arrested red-handed in Nghe An, had undergone cosmetic surgery to change her appearance to avoid arrest for smuggling heroin in 2011.
Her two accomplices, Nguyen Van Minh and Nguyen Van Hung, got 16 and 15 years respectively.
According to the indictment, Chin was involved in the smuggling of 73 grams of heroin to Nghe An Province in 2011. Nghe An police issued an arrest warrant for her, but Chin fled to Laos, had plastic surgery and got a fake identity.
She later returned to Hanoi, she also met Hung and Minh and the trio smuggled the cannabis from Laos.
Chin was arrested in Nghe An with the drugs while boarding a bus for Hanoi.
Subsequent investigations led to the arrests of her two accomplices.
Marijuana is considered an illegal drug in Vietnam just like in most other countries.
In Vietnam, trafficking more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine is punishable by death, as is producing or selling 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal narcotics.
