A truck driver in the northern province of Hai Phong was the sole survivor after he set fire to himself and his two infant daughters on February 14 after quarrelling his wife.
Local reports say that Vu Duy Hien, 28, who was desperate that his wife insisted on leaving home to work abroad, poured gasoline on himself and two little daughters and lit the fire.
The wife's brother, Nguyen Van Chat, who lives nearby, saw Hien burning with his daughters in his hands in the front yard of his (Chat's) house.
Chat shouted out for help and together with other neighbors managed to put out the flames and rush the three to hospital.
While 4-year-old Vu Thi Anh Thu and 18-month-old Vu Thi Truc succumbed to burn injuries, Hien is no longer in a critical condition and is being treated at a local hospital. Doctors said he had 70 percent burns on his body.
A few days before the tragedy happened, his wife Nguyen Thi Quyen, 23, had gone to her parents' house by herself to spend the lunar new year holiday after continuous quarrels with Hien.
Quyen, who had been a housewife since marriage, had tried to leave for China to work many times, but Hien had stopped her, leading to the frequent quarrels.
His father said that Hien had earlier tried to drown himself and his older daughter.
