Police in the northern province of Ha Nam said Tuesday they are investigating a case in which a 28-year-old man allegedly shot and killed his wife who was eight months pregnant.

Vu Van Cu, the son of Vu Van Tuyen, the administrative head of Ha Nam Province's Thanh Tan Commune, was arrested a couple hours after killing 27-year-old Pham Thi Hue around midnight on Monday.

Locals in Nham Trang Village, Thanh Tan Commune, rushed to his house after hearing a shooting noise and found Cu holding his three-year-old daughter in his arms, screaming that he had shot his wife dead, the news report said.

Su Quoc Lai, chief of the village, rushed into the house where he found Hue lying in a pool of blood. She had been shot in the chest.

Lai also found a homemade gun and a knife on the bed. He hid them quickly, fearing that Cu could use them again, the report said.

Lai then informed local police, but Su had already fled the site with his daughter when they arrived.

Hue was rushed to the Ha Nam General Hospital in the hope that the baby could be rescued as people saw it move in her belly, but it was too late, VietNamNet quoted Dao Xuan Anh, chief of Thanh Tan police division as saying.

Cu was arrested a couple of hours later as he was on his way to turn himself in to the police.

According to locals, Cu was well known to be a very jealous person and showed signs of drug addiction. He married Hue, a kindergarten teacher, in 2009.
