Police in central Vietnam on Friday arrested a man who allegedly set his ex-girlfriend’s house on fire last week, when her three children were sleeping inside.
Nguyen Trong Toan, 37, was arrested for investigation into charges of murder and property damage.
Toan’s ex-girlfriend, whose first name has been revealed as Thuy, had recently broken up with him, after being beaten several times by the jealous man, police said.
On Friday night last week, he came to her house in Binh Dinh Province asking her to change her mind. She turned him down.
He came back early the next morning and set the house on fire with gasoline.
Thuy had left the house but her three children were sleeping inside.
Neighbors heard their screaming and rescued all the three, aged 9 to 16, just in time before the house was engulfed in flames.
After the first arson attack, Toan allegedly set fire to Thuy's other house. Locals put out the fire after the doors were burnt down.
Police on Friday arrested him at a hotel in the neighboring Quang Ngai Province. They said he was holding two knives, trying to kill himself.
Toan later told police that he thought his ex-lover was seeing another man so he planned to kill her family and then himself.
