A Hanoi court sentenced a 24-year-old man to life in prison Friday for killing his alcoholic, mentally ill, and abusive father last year.

Le Van Truong stabbed Le Ngoc Ninh multiple times on December 16 last year, when he was drinking and singing with his brothers and their cousins and the old man scolded them, smashed a glass on Truong's head, and threatened him with a knife to his cheek.

Ninh died in hospital the next morning due to severe blood loss.

Truong told the court he had been drunk at the time and frustrated with his father for a while, news website VnExpress reported.

Ninh had returned home recently after treatment at a mental hospital.

He had three sons and a daughter.

The family was poor and life became more difficult for them after the father had an accident eight years earlier, causing him mental problems. He could not earn a living any more, and also began to demand wine from sellers for free, damaging their shops if they refused.

Every time his condition got worse, he would slam a knife or ax into the house walls. He also constantly beat his wife.

His wife said: "Many times he throttled me when I was sleeping, or pressed a knife in my neck, threatening to kill me."
