The mastermind of many container heists worth more than US$665,000 received a life sentence in Ho Chi Minh City on Monday.
Tran Tri Trung, 25, was found guilty of theft. According to the indictment, he led a team of 20, including container truck drivers from five companies, to steal from cargo containers.
Trung had several vacant sites in Ho Chi Minh City and the neighboring provinces of Binh Duong, Dong Nai and Tay Ninh and Tien Giang Province nearby that were used as truck stops.
He then had the containers drilled and cut to steal the goods inside.
The loss of goods was only discovered when the cargo reached the recipients.
They had 21 successful jobs between August 2010 and August 2011, stealing 190 tons of mostly cashew nuts, coffee and pepper worth nearly VND15 billion ($665,400).
His accomplices have also been jailed but with shorter terms.
Container thieves have caused many companies in Vietnam huge losses and bad reputation to their trade partners.
Statistics from Vietnam Cashew Association showed that container thieves between 2007 and 2011 caused losses worth nearly $2 million.
