A young man in Ho Chi Minh City was sentenced to death Friday for sedating a friend and dumping him into a river to rob his mobile phone and motorbike last year.
Nguyen Kim An, 20, were convicted in the murder and robbery of Luu Vinh Dat, who was An's classmate at a vocational school.
According to the indictment, An started planning the robbery after Dat told him about his family’s significant bank saving.
“I was broke. I had just lost my motorbike and computer,” An said at the court.
He bought some sleeping pills online to drug Dat.
His first attempt at a café in early February last year failed as the victim vomited after drinking his mixture.
He bought stronger sedative and tried one first before inviting Dat to his house on February 26, 2014 and serving him some "doctored" soft drink.
After Dat passed out, An took his iPhone, tied him and put him into a sack. He used the victim's motorbike to carry the sack to Phu My Bridge, and dumped it into the Saigon River
An claimed he thought Dat was dead after drinking the mixture.
The next day, he called the victim’s family to tell them that Dat was kidnapped, and demanded a ransom.
An told the court he did so to distract Dat's parent, who kept asking him about their son.
Locals found the victim’s body on March 4, 2014in and forensic tests found he died of drowning after being dumped into the river.
Police arrested An ten days later.
He told the court he did not plan to kill the victim and he only dumped Dat into the river out of panic.
The court demanded him to compensate the victim’s family VND122 million (US$5,600).
