A Ho Chi Minh City court on Friday sentenced a man to 11 years imprisonment for drunkenly driving and crashing into a car, killing four members of a family last year.
At around 10:40 p.m. on December 10, 2011, Nguyen Vu Thong, 31, drove a Toyota Fortuner drunkenly along Nguyen Huu Canh Street in District 1.
Thong drove fast and lost control of the vehicle. He crashed into a street barrier and encroached into a lane of traffic traveling in the opposite direction, leading to a head-on collision with a Hyundai sedan.
Another Toyota Fortuner, driven by a man named Dang Le Minh, traveling on the road could not avoid the first Toyota Fortuner and crashed into it.
There were four people inside the Hyundai: Tran Thi Bich Lien, 40, Tran Van Phan, Lien's 75-year-old father, Nguyen Chi Trung, Lien's 16-year-old son, and Nguyen Chi Hieu, Lien's nine-year-old son.
Lien, Phan and Trung died four hours later at a local hospital. Hieu died two days after the accident.
Minh sustained minor injuries.
Thong fled the scene and turned himself into police the following morning.
Thong was a driver for Dai Nam Viet Company. The car that caused the accident belonged to the company.
