A man was killed in an huge explosion that destroyed part of a four-storey house in Hanoi at 6.50 pm today, according to the police.
Some people who live in Thong Phong Alley, Ton Duc Thang St., told Thanh Nien that the loud explosion in the house No. 23 could be heard from hundreds of meters away.
The dead victim was identified as Nguyen Quoc Dat, 59, who did not live in the house. It is established that he was walking past the house when the explosion happened in the ground floor.
Two more people were injured in the blast and were rushed to Xanh Pon Hospital. VnExpress news website quoted neighbors as saying that one of the injured was the daughter of the house's owner.
Witnesses said the blast sent black smoke billowing into the air, which some witnesses said smelt like firecrackers.
 
According to a Thanh Nien reporter at the scene, the walls of other houses nearby were damaged.  
Neighbors said a family of six people have lived have lived in the house No. 23 for more than 10 years and used part of it as a sweet soup shop.
