A man who burned his 3-year-old son trying to make his wife cancel a divorce was sentenced to 20 years in jail in northern Vietnam on Wednesday.
Vu Van Quang, 31, from Thanh Hoa Province, received the jail term with murder accusation, news website VnExpress reported.
His son, Vu Quoc Linh, was burned on 90 percent of his body, doctors said. The boy has slightly recovered since the incident happened in April 2011.
The indictment said that Quang and his wife, Le Thi Ha, had separated because Ha had been beaten by her husband and could not stand it any more.
They took turns caring for their son.
In April, Ha filed a divorce petition with a local court. Quang arrived at the court with his son, poured gas on the boy, and threatened to burn him if she refused to withdraw the petition.
People in the area managed to make him stop.
But the boy was not that lucky six days later. Quang took his boy to the street in front of his wife's house, set the boy on fire with gas, and left on his motorbike.
Neighbors took the child to a pond and rushed him to the hospital.
