A thief posing as a philanthropist has made off with a local resident's motorbike in flood-stricken Nghe An Province.

The man introduced himself as head of a big real estate firm in Hanoi and asked to stay at a local house for the night.

He told the residents that he was waiting for his company's truck to deliver aid to flood victims, local police officer Le Khac Thuyet told Vnexpress on Friday.

He asked to borrow his host's motorbike to head into town to meet a truck the next morning but never returned, Thuyet said.

The thief even went so far as to prepare a list local victims. He told the victims to gather together to receive his donation the morning that he left with the motorbike.

On Thursday, police arrested the man's female companion, a local resident named Chu Thi Minh.

Minh said she met the man online and was offered to join his scheme. But the man abandoned her after getting the motorbike, she said.

Local authorities have launched a hunt for the conman.
