A 23-year-old man went missing Thursday after jumping into a tributary of the Mekong River in Can Tho to save his drowning dog.
Ha Buu Loc and the rest of his family had been carrying sand in a barge on the Can Tho River when their dog fell into the water, the victim’s father, Ha Ngoc Bich, said.
His son jumped in and managed to secure the dog, he said.
“I took the barge to the shore after seeing Loc swimming to the shore with the dog. However, I did not see him make it.”
The dog too is missing.
Local residents said in that section the river is deep with swift currents, and many people have drowned there.
Dozens of divers have been mobilized to search for Loc.
Also on Thursday three junior high school students drowned in Dong Nai Province after a girl fell into the water and two boys attempted to save her.
The trio and several others seventh graders from the Xuan Duong Junior High School had gone to the Ca Stream to play after class.
When Le Thi Kim Thoa fell into the water, Do Van Huy and Nguyen Hoang Phi Hung jumped in to rescue her despite not knowing swimming.
Other students called for help but it was too late and rescuers only managed to get their bodies.
