According to Soc Trang investigators, Vu and his wife, identified only as Nga travelled to Soc Trang on Monday to visit Nga's parents.

During his visit, many of Nga's relatives invited Vu to their houses to drink, a common habit among farmers in the delta.

Vu admitted to the crime, saying it began when Nga demanded he stop drinking and return to her parents' house for a meal.

Soon after the argument, Vu returned to the family home and began to insult his wife.

When his wife responded, a quarrel broke out and Vu fatally stabbed her with a pair of scissors. Police arrested Vu at the scene.

Alcohol abuse is common in the Mekong Delta, where many sociologists found that many women have sought better lives by marrying foreign husbands and migrating abroad.
