Police in the northern province of Hai Duong said a man has turned himself in after killing his grandmother, parents and a cousin with a machete on Saturday night.
Pham Duy Quy, 21, of Thanh Ha District reportedly picked up a sort of machete and cut down his father Pham Duy Tuan, 50, and his mother Nguyen Thi Thom, 46.
When his grandmother Nguyen Thi Lan, 82, and his cousin Pham Thi Hang, 27, who lived next door, heard screams coming from the house, they rushed to the site where Quy killed them as well.
By the time the police arrived, Tuan was found dead in the door to the kitchen; Thom lay dead in the bathroom.
Quy fled the scene but wandered to the police station soon afterward to turn himself in.
HIs motive for the killings remains unclear, and police say they're still investigating.
Quy’s neighbors said they hadn't heard quarreling in his house before the murder. They said Quy recently seemed a bit distant and stressed.
Some of his relatives told police he'd exhibited signs of mental illness, and his family once brought him to a traditional medical center to treat the illness.
However, the family had no medical record of Quy’s illness.
Police said rumors are circulating that Quy was high on drugs (crystal meth) when he committed the murders, but the police say there's little evidence to confirm them.
