One man was killed and another severely injured in a fight between two gangs that broke out in a Ho Chi Minh City bar early Tuesday.

The fight spilled out from inside Monaco bar in Go Vap District on to Le Van Tho Street , police said, adding many of the 30 or so people were armed with machetes.

The fight was broken up after the police fired three shots in the air, but by then Nguyen Van Thanh, 39, was dead with multiple stab wounds.

Another man, known only as Tinh, also 39, was rushed to hospital with a stab wound three centimeters long on his head and a similar one in his back, which doctors said pierced his lungs and caused fluids to flow out.

The gangs have had previous fights and began to attack each other in the bar on sight, according to initial enquiries.

The police have arrested three people in the fight including the murderer Le Quoc An, 20, from the city.

They found more weapons in motorbikes the gang members left behind.

Residents said it was stressful to live near the bar since gang fights were frequent there. The bar remains open until early in the morning, they said.
