A man suffocated to death as the result of being trapped in a 16-story building that caught fire in the central province of Ha Tinh Tuesday.

Phan Xuan Truong, 29, died at the hospital while several others sustained injuries from the fire at the BMC building, the tallest in the province a complex of hotels, offices, restaurants and a supermarket.

News website VnExpress cited the police as saying the fire was caused by some welding and started on the fourth floor.

Smoke soon spread all over the building, causing hundreds of panicked people to run down the stairs attempting to get out. Some people ran upstairs to await rescuers.

The fire was put out after one hour at around noon, after several glass doors had been shattered; plaster from the ceiling had fallen, while furniture, fans and air-conditioners had burned down.

The fire caused traffic jams in the downtown area of the province's capital city, also called Ha Tinh.

Police are looking for people responsible.
