A Ho Chi Minh City court on Monday sentenced a 22-year-old man to four years in prison after he ignored a police order to pull over and told another to shoot stones at traffic officers with a slingshot.
Nguyen Tan Tai’s jail term included one year for robbery while the boy who shot at the police, 14-year-old Tran Thanh Loc, will be put under police watch, the court said.
According to the indictment, on April 20, Tai and Loc were driving a motorbike on National Highway 22 in Cu Chi District without wearing helmets.
At a crossroads, the duo ran a red light and ignored an order to stop, prompting four officers to chase after them on two motorbikes.
Tai, who was driving, told Loc to use slingshot to shoot stones at the officers. An officer was slightly injured in his arm and chin and his helmet shield was broken.
Loc was arrested that day while Tai was arrested later on May 2.
During investigation, police found Tai had stolen a motorbike from a local resident.
The court said it decided to be lenient toward Loc because he was underage.
