Police in Ho Chi Minh City are investigating a case in which a man was severely burned at his house by unknown intruders over failure to repay a US$4,000 debt.
Vo Van Tai, 59, is being treated at the city's leading hospital, Cho Ray, with severe burns covering more than 40 percent of his body, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.
Doctors said Tai has passed the critical juncture but still had to undergo an operation on Friday to remove necrotic tissues.
Strange men broke into his house on Duong Ba Trac Street on the night of March 11, pouring gasoline on him from head to toe and then burned him alive.
Tai's family said his creditors had threatened to send gangsters after the man repeatedly failed to repay the money.
