Police in the northern province of Quang Ninh Friday rescued a 12-year-old girl who was allegedly kidnapped by her father for a ransom of VND150 million (US$7,194).
According to initial investigations, Nguyen Van Huan, 35. apparently led three other people, including one woman, to kidnap Nguyen Mai Phuong on her way to her teacher's house Thursday.
Then, they called Phuong's grandfather Nguyen Dinh Thai, demanding the ransom.
However, following up on Thai's complaint, police in Ha Long Town detected the gang and rescued Phuong from a local hotel.
Huan reportedly told the police that he and Phuong's mother had got divorced in 2008 and he had kidnapped his daughter because he was in debt and had conflicts with his ex-wife.
All four suspects are currently being kept in custody for further investigations, police said.
