A man from the northern port city of Hai Phong received a life sentence on Thursday for trafficking counterfeit money from China.
Dang Van Thang, 38, got life while his four accomplices, including his sister, received 18, 19 and 20 year jail terms, news website Dan Tri reported.
The gang was caught on December 14 last year while smuggling forged notes of more than VND280 million ($13,400), including VND100,000 and VND200,000 notes, across the Chinese border in Lang Son Province.
The gang members said they were provided the notes by a Vietnamese woman named Ngoan in Guangdong, China.
Over a period of time, they had trafficked notes that totaled nearly VND2 billion (US$96,000), police said.
