A court in Hanoi on Tuesday handed down a life sentence to a man for stabbing his 85-year-old friend to death during an argument after the latter's daughter scolded him for making noises in her café.
Nguyen Duc Chinh, 52, stabbed Nguyen Khac Cam with a large pocket knife three times, killing him, and also injured Cam's daughter Nguyen Thi Lan, 37, who he stabbed once, news website VnExpress reported, citing the indictment.
The two families were close and Chinh and Cam regularly played chess together at Cam's café in front of the house.
Chinh had allegedly made some unpleasant noises while he was playing chess with a young man on November 20, 2011, and Lan scolded him, asking him to not play chess at her café anymore.
Chinh returned to confront Cam the next day, bringing a clasp knife. Their talk did not go well and ended with Chinh attacking the father and daughter with his knife.
He expressed regret at the trial that he failed to control his temper.
