A court in central province of Binh Dinh on Monday handed down a life sentence to a man for killing an eight-year-old child as revenge against the boy's father, Tuoi Tre reported.
Dang Van Cuu, 23, was also ordered to pay over VND109 million (US$5,200) in compensation to the family of his victim, Nguyen Viet Dung.
According to the indictment, Cuu, an employee at a hotel owned by Dung's father, Nguyen Viet Cuong, kidnapped the boy on November 11 last year to take revenge on Cuong for scoldings he had received during his employment.
He then took Dung to a remote part of the Genh Rang Resort in Quy Nhon town, where he tied up the child limbs and stuffed gloves into his mouth.
As Dung cried and tried to resist, Cuu killed him by repeatedly smashing a rock into the child's face. After that he bought a mobile phone SIM card and sent text message threats to Cuong.
Prosecutors said Cuu kidnapped the boy after picking him up from school as he was asked to do by one of his colleagues at the hotel.
After the murder, Cuu told Cuong's family that he didn't meet Dung and he even went with Cuong to a local police station to report the missing boy.
However, Cuu, a former student of Quy Nhon University, where Cuong worked as a history lecturer, was arrested the next day.
