A court in the northern province of Bac Ninh on Thursday sentenced a man to death for rigging two motorbikes with explosives, one of which killed his pregnant sister-in-law and her daughter.
Nguyen Duc Tiem, 34, said he had rigged the motorbike of his sister-in-law only to "teach her a lesson," as she and her husband had looked down upon him during the time he was living with them.
"I did not expect things would get so serious," a Voice of Vietnam radio report quoted him as saying.
Nguyen Thi Quynh, 30, then three months pregnant, was driving her four-year-old daughter to school on December 1, 2011 when the motorbike exploded, killing both.
Another victim of Tiem was his close friend Le Duc Trung, 32, who had lost left arm in a similar explosion in June 2010.
Tiem suspected Trung was having an affair with his wife, while indicating to him that she was going out with another person to divert his suspicion.
The court ordered Tiem to compensate the deceased's family with VND130-140 million (US$6,240-6,720) and his friend with VND47 million ($2,255).
