A Ho Chi Minh City court has handed a jail term of 15 years to a 29-year-old man for a failed attempt to kill his wife and daughter over a minor argument earlier this year.
Le Cong Tin, a factory worker in Hoc Mon District, was convicted of murder by the HCMC People’s Court Tuesday.
The attacks occurred on the night of January 9, when Tin returned home from a friend’s birthday party and his wife Mai Thi Thuy Trang, also a factory worker, asked him for his salary to meet the family's monthly expenses.
He claimed he was yet to get paid.
Trang phoned Tin’s colleague and found out that the salary had been paid.
A quarrel broke out and Trang called Tin’s parents to tell them the story and that she wanted to divorce him.
Tin, who was drunk, called his father and said it was his last ever call to him.
He then took a hammer and hit his wife until she passed out, hit their three-year-old daughter in the head before hitting himself several times.
When Tin was hitting himself, Trang regained consciousness and ran out to cry for help. Tin then carried the child and followed.
Neighbors took the three to hospital, where doctors said the baby suffered 25 percent injuries while the couple escaped with minor injuries.
