The Da Nang People’s Court sentenced a 32-year-old man to 13 years in prison, on Saturday, for pouring acid on himself and his girlfriend after she broke up with him.
Mai Dinh Vinh was ordered to give VND583 million (US$27,300) to his victim, 30-year-old Tran Thuy Dung who suffered burns to 82 percent of her body.
According to the indictment, the duo began the relationship after meeting through the Internet in 2005. They rented a house in Ngu Hanh Son District in 2010, after dating for five years.
In May 2012, Dung said she wanted to break up with Vinh following some personal conflicts and moved out to live with her female friend, Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen.
On May 28, 2012, Vinh asked Dung to come to his house to talk.During their discussion, he asked her to move back in with him.
However, Dung refused and called Huyen to pick her up.
When Huyen arrived, Vinh asked Huyen to step outside. When she was gone, he grabbed Dung and poured a mug of acid over them both.
Investigators found that Vinh had purchased two liters of sulfuric acid prior to the meeting.
Vinh suffered burns to 72 percent of his body.
Both attacker and victim were hospitalized immediately and had been treated for more than a year before Vinh was arrested on June 6.
During the trial, Vinh said he should not have been prosecuted for the crime of murder because he was pouring acid on himself and it splashed onto Dung by accident.
In Vietnam, people can be convicted of “murder” even when their victim survives.
Meanwhile, Dung asked the court to strictly punish Vinh, arguing that he wasn't honest in his confession and citing the extent of her suffering.
Dung lost an eye and her face was egregiously distorted by Vinh's assault. She had to undergo nine surgeries before she was able to use the toilet by herself.
The crime has pushed her, a former vice director of a company, into poverty.
The court rejected Vinh’s defense, noting that he was much shorter than Dung and the act of pouring acid onto himself couldn't possibly have resulted in the caustic liquid landing on the top of her head.
