A court in Da Nang on Wednesday sentenced a man to ten years in prison for threatening to blow up a tourist attraction where he used to work and demanded his former employer to pay VND3 billion (US$133,000).
Le Duc Minh, 40, told the court that he planned to blackmail the company in July, a few days after he was dismissed as a security guard.
According to the indictment, he placed what looked like sticks of dynamite on the roof of a toilet inside the tourist attraction on July 12.
He then called the director, threatening to blow up the place and demanding VND3 billion.
During their negotiation, Minh agreed to reduce the money to VND2 billion.
When he was waiting for the payment in a forest, he heard a car with sirens passing by.
Thinking that it was a police car, Minh threw away his SIM card and fled.
A manager from the tourist attraction reached the forest later with the money but did not see Minh.
The man gave himself up at a police station on July 24 after days hiding in the neighboring province of Quang Tri.
Investigations showed that the dynamite was not real.
