A man fell to his death trying to exit an elevator stuck between two floors during a power outage in Hanoi Wednesday.

Nguyen Van Hoa, 56, was inside the elevator of the 12-story CT3 building, Cau Giay Disitrct, at around 9:40 a.m., when the electricity went out.

As the elevator hung between the fourth and fifth floor, Hoa called the building's security officers for help.

After the security officers managed to open the door of the elevator, Hoa jumped out of the elevator but he took a false step.

He fell to the bottom of the elevator's basement and died.

Nearby residents said they heard a crashing sound in the basement soon after the power cut.

When they arrived at the scene, they saw Hoa's dead body.

Initial investigations showed Hoa had just visited a relative's house in the apartment building when the accident happened.

Investors Vietnam Investment, Construction and Export-Import Holding Corp. opened the building in 2006.

Luong Van Tang, a resident on the third floor, told Tuoi Tre newspaper the elevator had gone out of order several times before.

"We reported this to the building's management board but the elevator has never been fixed completely, which led to this accident," he said.

Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
