A man drowned in an unmarked drainage canal in the southern province of Dong Nai on Wednesday, local police said.

According to the police, the accident happened at around 8 p.m. Tuesday when National Highway 20 flooded after heavy rains.

Vu Thanh Quang, 27, was riding his motorbike on the street when he fell into the drainage canal, which was completely submerged under water.

Quang was swept away, leaving his motorbike behind, and his body was found some seven kilometers from the site, police said.

Locals told Thanh Nien that not long ago another person fell into the same drainage canal, which is ten meters wide and over four meters deep, and was almost swept up in the same way, but he managed to save himself by holding onto a tree branch.

Since then they have continuously asked local authorities to set up barriers and warning signs around the canal, but nothing has been done so far.

Meanwhile, Tran Dinh Hung, inspector from the Directorate for Roads of Vietnam, said the drainage canal was built in 1975.
