A man in Hanoi died two days into police’s custody, and his family has not received any explanation including for his arrest.
Nguyen Quang Truong, 43, was arrested when police of Quoc Oai District came to seize a house of his relative last Friday and he came over to check.
Police arrested him for fighting officers on duty. They did not allow his family to see him until they informed them on Monday morning that he had died, local media reported.
Tran Van Xuan, Truong’s cousin, said Truong entered the house from the back door to check because an old and weak man was living there.
“Police broke the front door to enter and they arrested anyone they saw, including Truong,” Xuan told news website Infonet.
His wife Phung Thi Tam said she did not have a chance to see him before he died.
“We brought clothes and food for him but they did not let us see him.
“And they did not even tell us why they arrested him. We only heard from other neighbors that the police accused him opposing them.”
Tam said the police have not provided a clear reason of the death.
They told her that he woke up shaking on Monday and they took him to hospital but he died on the way.
They family has ordered forensic test to know for sure.
Hanoi authorities said they will investigate the cause of death.
