Police in the northern province of Bac Giang arrested a man on Wednesday for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl, before killing her and throwing her body into a well in a rural village, Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported.
Hoang Van Minh, 49, of Lang Giang District faces charges of "raping a minor" and "murdering a minor."
The story began last Sunday when the family of Hoang Thi Anh Nguyet, 11, reported her as missing.
Police and local residents searched the entire village, including the surrounding lakes and streams, to no avail.
Some residents told police they last saw Nguyet accompanied by Minh, a cousin of one of her grandparents, the night before she was reported missing.
Police arrived at Minh's house to discover that it had been abandoned since Minh and his wife divorced. Minh, they would later discover, had remained homeless and jobless ever since..
After a brief search of the home, police discovered Nguyet's body in a narrow well.
Minh was arrested, on Wednesday, at an abandoned house elsewhere in the village.
After initially denying the charges against him, Minh later confessed to raping and killing the child.
He told police that he had asked Nguyet to accompany him to buy some cigarettes on Saturday night and then led the girl to his abandoned home where he raped her.
He said he killed Nguyet (though he did not specify how) and threw her body into the well to cover his crime.
The case remains under investigation.
