The Ho Chi Minh City police Wednesday arrested a man for allegedly causing the death of a woman and injuries to a man by opening his car door and crashing it into their motorbike.
Loc Van Quang, 24, had caused the accident two days earlier, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.
He had parked his car on Au Co Street, Tan Binh District, and opened the door to get out, knocking Tran Quoc Tuan, 40, who had come up behind him, and his wife.
The woman, Tran Thi Thanh Huyen, 36, who was riding pillion, died on the spot after hitting her head on the road, and Tuan was hospitalized unconscious.
Last month a similar fatal accident occurred in the central province of Nghe An, when a car driver opened a door and knocked off a motorbike rider who fell under a passing truck.
Where the motorbike riders are not at fault, the person opening the car door car could be fined VND5-50 million (US$238-2,380), or be jailed for up to five years, online newspaper VnExpress quoted a lawyer as saying.
