Man arrested for transporting drugs in northern Vietnam

Police in Bac Giang Province on Thursday arrested a man for transporting 47 kilograms of heroin.

When Le Quang Dong, 42, was pulled over for speeding by traffic police in Tan Yen District, he suddenly attempted to flee, but was nabbed by the officers.

When traffic police officers in Tan Yen District stopped his Toyota Altis at around 10 a.m. on Thursday, Le Quang Dong, 42, a Hoa Binh Province resident, suddenly attempted to flee, but was nabbed by the officers.

Police checked his car and found a carton containing 140 packets of heroin weighing 47 kg in total. They also found 80 synthetic drug tablets when searching his clothing.

Dong confessed to police to trading and transporting the illegal narcotics.

Dong and the illicit drugs have been transferred to the Bac Giang police's drug crime division for further investigation.

Under the Vietnamese Penal Code, those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty.
