Police in the northwestern Vietnamese city of Lao Cai arrested a man who was transporting a severed head and two legs of a sun bear on a motorbike last weekend, Vietnam News Agency reported Tuesday.
Le Duy Ly, police chief of the city's Cam Duong Commune, said a group of police officers were waiting on a road after receiving a tip-off from local residents that two wildlife traders would arrive with animal parts on a motorbike.
When they spotted two men on a motorbike, one holding a box at the back, they signaled them to stop.
But they sped away instead of stopping. The officers chased after them and managed to catch up.
The two jumped off the bike and ran away, but the man riding pillion was caught shortly afterwards.
Vang Xuan Hang, 34, a native of Sa Pa District, confessed to buying the head and legs from a stranger in Sa Pa town for VND20 million (US$960).
He planned to sell them in Lao Cai.
The police are investigating.
