The Ho Chi Minh City police Sunday arrested a man who allegedly jumped into a parked police car and drove away, sparking off a high-speed chase by police officers.
The man, who was identified as Le Van Giap, 30, was arrested around midnight in District 9, the police said, adding that the chase ended with an accident.
Giap got into a car belonging to a group of traffic police officers on Hanoi Highway and headed for Bien Hoa Province at high speed. He was chased by officers on several motorbikes.
The car hit a concrete barrier near the Dong Nai Bridge, damaging its front end. But Giap continued on to the Vung Tau Intersection, where the vehicle crashed into another barrier and got a flat tire.
The pursuing officers seized him then. They said Giap was very drunk and slept for many hours at the police station.
When Giap sobered up, he told the police that he mistakenly drove the police car because he was so drunk.
