Police in the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu arrested a man Monday for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl at least twice, and he potentially faces the death penalty if found guilty.
The parents of the girl, identified only as P., rushed into the house after they heard her screaming at 5 a.m. on Sunday, and found Nguyen Chanh Thong, 35, running out of her room.
P. told them it was the second time in three days Thong had forced her to have sex with him. He had slapped her on the first occasion and threatened to kill her if she told anyone.
Police said Thong, an employee of the family's, had taken advantage of the fact the girl's parents were busy selling stuff at a nearby market.
Under Vietnamese law, rapists could get between 13 and 16 years if the victim is less than 13, and a life sentence or death if younger.
The police are investigating.
