Police in Vietnam's Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang Sunday arrested a man who nearly severed the hand of a pregnant woman to snatch her gold bangles.
Lam Van Khanh, 20, of Vinh Chau town faces charges of "robbery" and "attempted murder."
According to the police, Khanh broke into the house of Thach Thi De, 20, in a village when she was alone.
He strangled her and violently slashed at her left hand with a knife he had got from the kitchen to grab the five gold bangles she was wearing.
As she resisted and shouted for help, he continued to slash her on the back and also stole her necklace and ring.
When De's husband came home, Khanh had already fled.
De was rushed to hospital with multiple injuries, but doctors were unable to save her baby.
Based on De's statement, the police found that Khanh had sold the stolen gold for VND5.6 million (US$268) to a local jewelry.
They arrested him Sunday evening when he was about to board a bus for Ho Chi Minh City.
