Police in the northern province of Thai Binh arrested a young man Tuesday for fatally stabbing a doctor, and injuring another, after his brother was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Nguyen Van Dung, 18, of Vu Thu District was arrested shortly after he fled the crime scene early Tuesday morning, Vietnam News Agency reported.
At around 11 p.m. on Monday, Dung and his mother brought his 20-year-old brother, Nguyen Van Hung, to the Vu Thu District General Hospital.
Hung was reported to be in critical condition. Dr Pham Duc Giau, 60, and a male nurse, Nguyen Nam Thang, were on duty.
According to Dr Ngo Duy Hoan, who was injured but has recovered, the patient was rushed to emergency room with his limbs cold, lips turning purple and hardly breathing.
"Doctors soon could not measure his blood pressure or feel his pulse," Hoan said. "His blood circulation had stopped."
The nurse, Thang, said Dung had repeatedly yelled at the doctors, threatening to damage the hospital and kill the doctors if they could not save his brother.
The doctors called the police and four police officers were sent to the hospital to keep order.
Hung, however, died after more than one hour of treatment.
After Hung's family was informed of the news, four doctors and officers invited Hung's mother into a room and explained the cause of his death.
Dung suddenly entered the room, pulled a knife, and stabbed Dr. Hoan in the stomach. Hoan luckily escaped death.
Another doctor and the nurse Thang managed to run away. Dr Giau could not escape and was stabbed in the chest.
Giau ran into another room but soon collapsed and died.
Dung fled the scene quickly, according to police.
He jumped on a xe om (motorbike taxi) and hid in a hired apartment but was arrested at around 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
Local police are still investigating the case.
