Police in the northern Vietnamese province of Thanh Hoa Monday arrested a man for illegally growing poppy plants in his garden, online newspaper Dan Tri reported.

After catching Ho Dinh Lai, 61, of Tinh Gia District red-handed when he was harvesting the poppy, the police said he grew the plants on a plot of land with black nets to avoid being noticed by neighbors.

They also seized poppy plants from a bathroom in his house, and destroyed 40 square meters of plants with flowers in the garden.

Lai told them he bought poppy seeds from some northern provinces and grew the plant for medicinal purposes.

They are investigating.
