The Khanh Hoa police Tuesday arrested a man on suspicion he had set off explosives outside the province police chief's house a day earlier.

Nguyen Viet Truong, 56, the suspect, is the owner of a rock quarrying business in the province, and the police said they identified him by narrowing down the search to people with access to explosives.

He had allegedly used a remote control to set off the explosion, but had no personal enmity with Colonel Tran Ngoc Khanh, the police director, they said.

The explosion occurred in front of Khanh's house at 54 Phan Chu Trinh, Nha Trang, at around 6.30 a.m., shattering glass doors and windows in the vicinity.

No casualties were reported, but the explosion caused panic in the neighborhood.

Khanh, 49, who was appointed head of the Khanh Hoa Police in April 2011, has ordered raids of many drug trafficking and prostitution establishments in Nha Trang.

The police are still investigating the motive behind the attack.
