Police in the southern province of Dong Nai arrested Saturday a 46-year-old man on suspicion he murdered his sick, elderly mother.
Le Van Phuoc has admitted to having tortured his mother for a long period, including the day she died.
Police, who were tipped off by local residents on Friday night, found a hole on the head of the 82-year-old Ly Thi Nga, as well as new and old bruises on her body.
Phuoc's wife Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hien, 33, said Nga had become unable to perform daily activities, and that Phuoc had tortured her on Friday evening after his mother went to the toilet and failed to clean herself.
Hien said when she asked Phuoc to help change his mother's clothes, he shouted at his mother, beating her on the face, before carrying her into the bathroom.
When the old woman refused to open her mouth to have her teeth brushed, he squeezed her mouth and used a chopstick to pry it open, the wife said, adding that she tried to dissuade him from the behavior.
Phuoc continued torturing his mother until the woman passed out, and did not bring her to hospital, despite the fact she was bleeding.
Hien said she went out to buy bandages, but that the woman was dead by the time she returned.
Vietnam sentences convicted murderer to between seven and 15 years in jail, but murdering one's own parent is punishable by between 12 years in jail and death sentence.
