Ho Chi Minh City police said Thursday they have arrested a man who tried to bribe traffic police officers after failing to produce papers for a luxury motorbike.

The Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported that Pham Van Phong, 41, is being detained on charges of attempted bribery.

On Tuesday, Phong, who was in HCMC, drove a Honda SH with Nguyen Van Thong, 33, on the back seat to the Thu Duc Market.

There, they hired a 25-year-old truck driver named N.H.P to transport the luxury motorbike, which had a Hanoi registration plate,  to Vung Tau City for VND1.2 million (US$57).

As they drove to Vung Tau, P., suspecting that the bike had been kept illegally, stopped his truck on a road where a team of District 9 traffic police officers were on duty.

P. reported his suspicions to the officers and they asked Phong to produce the papers for the bike. When Phong failed to do and offered the policemen VND2 million ($96) to be let off, he was detained.

District 9 police are investigating the origin of the bike.
